The Study Of Giddens’ Institutional Risk

In the late modernity, the risk produced by the early concept of rational development appear constantly and infiltrate the whole society, which seriously affects the good operation of society and makes the society into a dilemma filled with anxiety. Therefore, the risk become dominant logic in people’s behavior, which indicates the arrival of the "risk society". Due to the risk’s importance to the development of society, it has also become the research object of social theory and formed different risk theory, mainly including institutional risk theory represented Giddens and Beck, risk culture theory represented by Douglas and Lash, risk system theory represented Luhmann and risk management theory based on Foucault’s discipline theory. Among the four risk theories, Giddens’ institutional risk theory is the most profound and authoritative one, but it is not attracts enough attention.Giddens believes that modernity is a kind of institutional modernity supported by a series of institution. And then, he argues that modern risk is a kind of man-made institutional risk in essence. As the kernel of modern system, abstract system is the key concept in Giddens’ analyzing of modern risk. Giddens’ analysis to the consequences of modernity is based on its structural theory. It is his solid theoretical mansion that makes its analysis of the risk more profound.So, based on institutionalism paradigm, the paper analyzes and studies the Giddens’ institutional risk theory by the structured theory as the analysis tool. Firstly, we overall analyze the study of Giddens’ risk from institutional perspective, including the time condition of the study of institutional risk, the interpretation of institutionalism paradigm and the perspective of risk. Secondly, we study the double process of socialization and individualization of modern risk from institutional perspective. Thirdly, It emphasize that the paradox of institutional reflexivity is the root cause of risk dilemma. Fourthly, how to get out of the risk dilemma about Giddens will be studied. Finally, the study of Giddens’ institutional risk will be evaluated and analysed, meanwhile, we will find beneficial enlightenment to our country to cope with the challenge of risk in the evaluation.
