Vocational education takes on heavy responsibilities in cultivating high-quality laborers and skilled talents. With the rapid development of global economy and the constant improvement of enterprise requirement for employment, vocational education has met with unprecedented challenges. But the long-formed universal and conventional teaching method has been unable to meet the requirements of modern vocational education for vocational ability training, making it imperative to reform the teaching method and improve the teaching quality.Action-oriented teaching is one of the world’s advanced vocational education methods since it’s student-oriented, lays emphasis on process formation and advocates “action and ability orientation”. Compared to China’s traditional teaching method, the most important feature of this method is that student behavior is guided reasonably to constantly arouse students’ learning interests, cultivate their cooperative consciousness and innovative thinking,and promote them to obtain and improve action capabilities. Action-oriented teaching has been widely used in China’s secondary vocational school teaching since the 1990 s, with a lot of educational reform experience gathered, but for mathematics, an elementary cultural course, the teaching model is still at the imitation stage, with many difficulties and obstacles arising in the teaching practice.With an original intention to improve students’ comprehensive abilities, this paper sets a research goal to promote secondary vocational mathematical teaching reform, to mitigate the contradiction between secondary vocational mathematical teaching and learning, bring forth new ideas to the educational contents and teaching methods of secondary vocational mathematics, and arouse students’ learning interests, so that mathematics should serve students’ career development in a better way.Directed by action-oriented teaching theory, this paper carried out a preliminary study and discussion on the adaptability and availability of action-oriented teaching in secondary vocational mathematical teaching by the use of such research methods asliterature analysis, questionnaire survey and action research based upon the author’s personal teaching practice, putting forward a model and implementation strategy for the development of action-oriented teaching in secondary vocational mathematical teaching. Then, it expounded the specific application of action-oriented teaching in the fashion of case application, highlighting the practicability of this research. The practice result indicates that action-oriented teaching fitted in with the characteristics of secondary vocational school students, able to be used suitably and effectively in secondary vocational mathematical teaching.
