China is a country of poetry. Inherited the tradition of classical poetry,the modern poetry express personal emotions more directly, which can edify students’ sentiment as well as improve the students’ aesthetic taste. Modern poetry become the indispensable part of Chinese teaching in junior high school. But now, poetry teaching is unloved, which led to that students’ poetry feelings is disappearing.In order to understand modern poetry learning and teaching situation in junior high school more authentically, the author made a questionnaire among students and teachers of three junior high schools in the ZHONGLOU district. Through questionnaire and data analysis, the author found that student lack of interests, teacher deficient of appreciation and teaching in single way are three challenges in modern poetry teaching. For the purpose of renewed students learning interest in modern poetry and let teacher no longer afraid of modern poetry teaching, the paper point out problems and propose solutions in modern poetry teaching, which combined with the related teaching theory and the physical as well as mental development characteristics of junior high school students. The paper can be divided into four parts:The first part(the first chapte introduction)is defining the conception of modern poetry, expounding the importance of the study and summing up predecessor’s research results about modern poetry teaching in junior high school.The second part(the second chapter) is analyzing the results of questionnaire,combing modern poetry selections in junior Chinese textbook(JIANGSU edition) and summing up the junior high school teaching situations from teacher, student and textbook three aspects.The third part(the third chapter) is synthesizing the investigations to further studythe current situation of modern poetry selections,student learning and teacher teaching situations in modern poetry. Specifically, in modern poetry selections, problems are that outdated and numbers of selections as well as utilization efficiency on textbook is low. Problems in student aspect are that lack of interests and initiative, and less ability to learn. Problems in teacher aspect are that deficiency of poetic accomplishment, legacy of teaching theory and single boring way of teaching method.The forth part(the forth chapter) is to propose methods of improving modern poetry teaching in junior high school, on the basis of analyzing problems. On the teaching materials, textbook compilers should rationally arrange teaching content,improve utilization of textbook and pay more attention to modern poetry writing section. Students should generate interests in modern poetry study, actively engage in modern poetry learning and try to write modern poetry. Besides, teachers should strength the culture foundation, enhance their self-cultivation, strengthen reading guidance to students, optimize modal of instruction and enhance students’ practical ability.
