Talent cultivation is the most basic function and mission of university ever since its emergence in Middle Ages. With the rapid development of the popularization of higher education, Chinese universities have begun to make talent cultivation mode reform in order to improve the talent cultivating quality. Some key universities implemented the general education subsequently and reformed the College System. The College System reform, which inherits the spirit of Chinese traditional academy and learn from the residential college system in UK and America, is an important practice and exploration for talent cultivation reform. Therefore, the generalization and analysis of the previous practice and exploration of College System reform carries great significance and is beneficial to exploring the talent cultivation of Chinese undergraduates nowadays.On the basis of the historical background of the reforming of undergraduate talent cultivation mode and the college system, this thesis empathically illustrates the internal relevancy between the general education reform and the college system reform, analyzes the advantages and plight that Chinese universities are facing during the implementation of college system, and offers the ways to deepen the reform in view of the reform of college system in Fudan University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and East China Normal University. This thesis contains six chapters in total. Chapter one, based on the introduction to the development of general education in Europe and North America, illustrates the development history of general education in Mainland of China and Taiwan Area. Chapter two mainly compares the Chinese traditional academy with the residential college system of Oxford University and Yale University and points out their reference function on present college system reform. Chapter three mainly studies the college system in Chinese University of Hong Kong and analyzes its experience in the forming of distinctive college system by inheriting from the ancient academy. Chapter four focuses on the characteristics and current reform situation in terms of organizational structure, student engagement, general education courses and tutorial system, in view of the reform of college system in Fudan University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, East China Normal University. The last chapter points out the plight that universities in Mainland of China are suffering from in their reform and provides the effective ways to deepen the reform.
