FLA motivation is a kind of internal motivationthat can promote foreign language learning. It shows thestrong desire to learn and master a language. And as another factor that affecting learning, the academic delay of gratification is a kind of ability, which a student is willing to resist temptation for seeking more valuable long-term learning goals. Both of them is closely related to the efficiency of learning. This study uses literature analysis, questionnaire and SPSS 21.0 to analyze the data, explore the status quo of senior high school students’ English learning motivation, discuss the relationships between English learning motivation and the academic delay of gratification. Through data to analyze the reasons and find the related influencing factors that can give some enlightenment.The research mainly falls into three parts: Firstly, based on the previous literature, this paper reviews some relevant findings concerning the topic, and then discusses the research methods and research questions of this study. Secondly, we have made a survey of some 236 school students about the status quo and characteristics of English learning motivationsin terms of gender, grade, family sources and recent levels of English respectively. Finally, this study discusses the relationship between English learning motivation and the academic delay of gratification.The results are as follows:(1) The level of senior high school students’ motivation in English learning(M=3.356) is above the average 3. But in different gender, grade, there are significant differences, and there is no significant difference in terms of family source.(2) Various types ofsenior high school students’ English learning motivation developed unbalanced, and there are significant differences, instrumental motivation(M=4.20) and achievement motivation(M=3.852) are stronger than other three types of motivations, the external motivation(M=2.449) is relatively weak.(3) Senior high school students’ English learning motivation and the ability of academic delay of gratification have a significant correlation(P<0.05), and the academic delay of gratification can predict the strength of English learning motivation(R~2=0.123).(4) Senior high school students’ ability of academic delay of gratification has an immediate impact on instrumental motivation, internal motivation, external motivation and achievement motivation. And it has the most significant influence on instrumental motivation. However, the academic delay of gratification has no impact on integrative motivation.
