Since the beginning of 2009 China has been enlarging enrollment of Full-time Professional Degree postgraduates for graduating student. For a particular occupational area in China, the Full-time Professional Degree effectively increases a large number of outstanding professional talents with highly professional accomplishment and creativity. Master Degree in Engineering is one of the important kinds. Compared with in-service Professional Degree students, students of Master Degree in Engineering study in school for long time and don’t have work practice or similarly practical work experience, but the training objectives for Master Degree in engineering requires them to become advanced application-oriented professionals with great professional accomplishment and a strong ability to solve practical problems. It also requires them to assume professional or managerial responsibilities. In a result, practical ability is an important part in training Full-time Master Degree in Engineering and it directly affects the quality of Master Degree in Engineering.Because practical abilities are acquired and developed during training, at the present stage, practical abilities training for Master Degree in Engineering includes training program, curriculum, professional internship and evaluation systems. These parts have great influences on the improvement of practical abilities. Therefore, this research mainly explores how to strengthen practical abilities of Master Degree and tries to figure out some questions:What are factors in forming and influencing practical abilities? What is the present training situation of Full-time Master Degree in Engineering? What is these training parts’ weakness? How to strengthen these parts to reach the aim for strengthening practical abilities?From the enterprises’ requirement for engineering talents and standards of ABET in America, this research analyses the meaning and contents of "practical abilities" in Full-time Professional Degree postgraduates training. The training for Master Degree in Engineering is to solve practical problems and to design or promote products, technology and crafts by using professional knowledge and skills. Through these theoretical analysis and some present development programs for Master Degree in engineering in most domestic universities, this research analyses the status quo from training program, curriculum which includes Two Tutor Systems, off-campus internship and evaluation systems. After summarizing the present development programs and analyzing the training method, we can find that in most universities, the training for Master Degree in Engineering concentrates on its objectives, curriculum and the thesis. Compared with training for Academic postgraduates, practical training for Master Degree in Engineering is lack of complete evaluation system of practical abilities. Therefore, this research also hopes to figure out an evaluation system which is more suitable for improving the practical abilities in practice and internship.From the theoretical analysis on training program, curriculum, professional internship and evaluation systems, the present training programs of practical abilities in engineering need to pay more attention on establishing a reasonable training objectives, arranging curriculum based on the situation and adopting the Practicing Teaching Mode. Training programs also need to set up an effective Practicing Teaching Mode, emphasizing off-campus professional internship and using completely dynamic evaluation system of practical abilities. Based on the analysis, we selected 7 engineering departments, made a questionnaire about students’practical abilities and discussed with some master degree in engineering. In a result, we find that main problems appearing in the present training of practical abilities include the scatter-shot approach to arranging curriculum, formalistic two tutor systems and the lack of efficient implement. As a result, we further discuss the problems ofdevelopment of practical curriculum, off-campus practice, practical Two Tutor Systems, cooperation between universities and enterprises and complement of evaluation by both universities and enterprises and solutions to these problems.
