History activity class (hereinafter referred to as activity class) is a new type of class that emerges from curriculum reform and fully reflects the ideas of it. To encourage autonomic learning, cooperative learning and inquiry learning, to advocate the innovation of teaching methods and evaluations and to make all the students get development are pointed out in the basic idea of History Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education (2011 edition). Meanwhile, in the aspect of content standard,2 or 3 inquiry activities are suggested in each unit and there are about 3 teaching cases of activity class arranged in every copy of book. Above all, it can be seen that the aim of history curriculum reform for junior high school is to make students feel and understand the generating process of knowledge, to train students’scientific spirit and form the habit of innovative thinking and to pay attention to cultivating students’ability of collecting and processing information, ability of acquiring knowledge, ability of analyzing and solving problems, ability of solidarity and cooperation and ability of social activity. In order to achieve this goal, to depend on limited regular classroom teaching is not enough, while the development of activity class can make up this defect better. Through the effective development of activity class, historical education is activated and history is endowed with vitality. The mode of knowledge dissemination and ability cultivation can be formed.The setting of activity class is an important part of content in the curriculum reform for basic education. It is not a dispensable extracurricular activity, but has been an essential part of teaching content. At the beginning of implementing the new curriculum reform, teachers were highly enthusiastic about activity class which was shown in open classes’teaching a lot. However, it was not long before the practice and study of activity class faded out. Therefore, the setting of activity class is the highlight of new curriculum reform but a big difficulty as well. There exist a lot of problems in teaching practice, for instance, some teachers believe that they spend much more effort on activity class than on traditional class and finally it turns out to be useless. Moreover, the teaching design and implement are at random. There is neither a clear theme nor a concrete organizational procedure and requirement. Furthermore, for lack of scientific and effective management, activity class evolves into "self-study class" or "free class". Being short of scientific evaluation system of this type of class, it is hard to mobilize students’ positivity and cultivate their abilities. A large number of teachers are unwilling to or afraid to teach this kind of class. The factors that cause this problem are various, such as the impact of exam-oriented education, the indifference of some school leaders, the problem of distributing teaching time, the problem of developing and utilizing teaching resources, the problem of coordinating with other disciplines and teachers of other subjects, the problem of cooperating with and getting support from students’parents and communities, the problem of safety and organization, etc. Therefore, how to carry out activity class effectively is still worth introspecting and discussing.The author has read and classified many a discourse of front-line teachers and also referred to monographs and literatures of prominent scholars about activity class and history activity class for junior high school. Moreover, the extensive and in-depth interviews and questionnaire surveys of different schools, teachers and students have been done. The problems existing in carrying out history activity class for junior high school and their causes have been found and analyzed. Based on those mention above, as a front-line history teacher of Guilin Baoxian Middle School, the author has made a case analysis of developing history activity class at her school and proposed classification teaching principles for different types of activity class. At present, the effective teaching of history activity class for junior high school is in dilemma. According to the point of view in new curriculum concept, a curriculum is an ecosystem where teachers, students, teaching materials and environment interact with each other. As for the aspect of how to develop and utilize teaching resources effectively, of how to improve and change teachers’ role positively, of how to cultivate and evaluate students’abilities scientifically, of how to be compatible with exam-oriented education and make this type of class normalized and so on, this subject research has made a deep introspection and study. Thus, it summarizes some universal and regular teaching methods and strategies for effective activity class teaching so that history activity class for junior high school can be effectively developed in different areas and different types of school and the basic ideas and aims of curriculum reform can be better implemented. Thus, students can really draw rich humanistic literacy from history education and will achieve the integrative ability and potential for future success.
