With the arrival of information era and the development of geography curriculum reform, the training of geographical information cognition and ability has become an inevitable tendency of the lesson revolution in today’s world. The cultivation of the ability, especially the capacity of handling geographical information, separately has its requirements and goals in the International Charter on Geographical Education and in both domestic and foreign standards of the course. And over the years, these requirements have been carried out and paid much attention to in Chinese Geography curriculum criteria of high schools. Nowadays, Chinese NCEE of Geography new course focuses on the integration of students’ academic competence and geographical ability. However, the capacity that high school students deal with geographical information is weak. As to the fact, the studying has much more importance in exploring strategies of the students’ ability training in Nanchong First High School. Also, it can actually promote students’ development in an all-round way through improving their academic capacity.The first section summarizes the research findings of the capacity of processing ge ographical information, pointing out the problems and defects in present researches, and determines research perspectives and frames.The next part defines some conceptions about the competence, sums up the types o f Geography academic acknowledge in high school’s education and also expresses theor etical bases of the competence cultivation.According to the statistics analysis of the questionnaires about the capacity from Nanchong first high school, the third part describes and analyzes current situation and problems in competence training.On the basis of some cases, the forth section, taking account of components, influe nces and problems, gives practical strategies about the students’ competence cultivation in Nanchong school.The paper ends with a conclusion of the subject studying and the discussion of the problems in current training situation and shortcomings in the author’s studies.
