In recent years, higher vocational education in Guizhou has made breakthrough progress in the scale, but there are also some problems, such as a utilitarian tendency of laying particular stress on cultivating students’ professional skills, but ignoring the students’ spirit cultivation and sustainable development. In March this year, building first-class professional colleges and universities was proposed on the NPC &CPPC, which puts forward new talent cultivating specifications for higher vocational colleges from the national level. Obviously, talents cultivated by Guizhou higher vocational colleges can not match the talent standard of a first-class professional college. Holistic education aims at realizing a person’s full scale development, giving full play to promote individual potential and cultivating independent and complete persons of all-round development. Covering various aspects required by a man’s all-round development such as knowledge, intelligence, ability, spirit and so on, holistic education can guide for the talent cultivating work in higher vocational colleges in Guizhou.On the basis of exploring the basic connotation and characteristics of the holistic education, and with the holistic education concept as the theoretical guidance, and the talents training goal of higher vocational education with the country as a realistic basis, this paper studies the talent cultivation problems concerning the students’ quality education and ability training of Guizhou higher vocational colleges under the horizon of holistic education. Through questionnaire survey and literature analysis, it is found that many problems exist in the students’ quality education and ability training of Guizhou higher vocational colleges. For example, the students’ moral quality needs to be elevated, the students’ humanity quality remains to be improved and the students’ critical ability is not strong. Several reasons contribute to these problems: 1 Guizhou higher vocational colleges strengthen political philosophy of universities but ignore humanistic philosophy.2 Guizhou higher vocational colleges pay too much attention to technologism but neglect humanism. 3 Exam-oriented educational system influences the students’ quality and ability. 4Educational practice in Guizhou higher vocational colleges is divorced from its theoretical guidance. By deeply analyzing the causes of these problems, this paper puts forward the countermeasures to improve the students’ quality education and ability training of Guizhou higher vocational colleges from the following five aspects: 1setting up holistic concept; 2combining instrumental rationality with value rationality; 3strengthening the combination of the core competence of the students; 4developing and creating a good campus atmosphere; 5improving the evaluation mechanism.
