After thirty years of reform and open-up, Chinese banking industry is in a stage of integrated development. Bank executives are gradually aware of the importance of career management in enhancing staff competence, stimulating employee enthusiasm, retaining talents, improving bank performance and realizing sustainable growth for the bank. As preliminary efforts, most of the banks only launch sporadic career management activities. Domestic banking industry lacks comprehensive career management system. The unfulfilled needs of personal development of employees lead to lower employee job satisfaction and negative emotions, thereby affecting the performance level. This paper takes Z Bank, a representative domestic bank, as the study object. By field surveys, in-depth interviews with former employees, questionnaire survey of staff satisfaction and factor analysis of survey responses through SPSS19.0, the paper summarized six critical factors in the satisfaction of bank staff career management, i.e. opportunities for competence improvement, institutional policy support, fair performance evaluation, promotion opportunities, training, and modest working pressure. Combining with interviews of departing staff and field investigation, the paper summarizes the staff career management problems of Z Bank, and proposes increasing management attention, enhancing staff awareness of self-planning, and establishing a sound career management system, compatible promotion mechanism, and training and evaluation system as countermeasures to such career management problems. Through such study, the author wishes to provide some ideas and reference for the authorities of Z Bank on employees’ career management.
