In the industrialized society, the automobile industry is the pillar of national economy. It plays a strategic role in the national economy, symbolizing the level of industrialization of a certain country. Due to nearly50years of substantial development, China’s automobile industry is beginning to take shape. Especially after the accession to WTO, the scale of Chinese automobile industry has been continuously expanded, making China grow into a massive country in terms of automobile production and sales. Currently, there are dozens of automobile enterprises in China, including21listed enterprises. These listed enterprises are the main force of the automobile industry of China.Among various approaches and dimensions of evaluating an enterprise, core competitiveness is the most significant attribute that makes an enterprise unique. However, there is not a consensus that clearly elaborates how to analyze the core competitiveness of a company. Therefore, in China, lack of appropriate standard is still a problem for analyzing automobile enterprises’core competitiveness.According to the theme of this study--core competitiveness evaluation of Chinese automobile enterprises, the writer developed the research based on a structure that consists of proposing question, literature review, market introduction, constructing index system, empirical study, and finally conclusion and suggestion. A combined research approach has been conducted, including normative analysis, empirical analysis, qualitative and quantitative analysis. From theoretical perspective, this study proposed a multi-angle evaluation frame, and applied factor analysis to revise the index evaluation system, enriching current literature of core competitiveness of automobile enterprises. This dissertation consists of five parts, and they are arranged as follows:The first part is mainly about raising research question, including Chapter1and Chapter2. The research background has been reported in the Introduction (Chapter1). In the Chapter2, the concept of core competitiveness of Chinese automobile enterprises is concluded after reviewing current literature achievements. In the second part, Chapter3introduced the development process of automobile industry of China. Afterwards, the writer analyzed the competitiveness of different types of automobile enterprises through the SWOT analysis, and identified the features of capital intensive, technology intensive and knowledge intensive enterprises within automobile industry. The conclusion of this Chapter is that creativity is a vital competitiveness for automobile enterprises, and domestic private enterprises have more advantages in relation to creativity. In the third part that shown as Chapter4, the writer studied the core competitiveness of automobile enterprises in the light of Porter’s Diamond Model. In order to finally construct a reliable index evaluation system, indicators from five different dimensions are included in the empirical model, which are:1) Market environment;2) Production factors;3) Corporate operation;4) Government policy; and5) Technology enhancement. These five dimensions are interacted, which jointly determine the core competitiveness of automobile enterprises. The fourth part is Chapter5, which presented empirical evidence. Referring to the SWOT results and the different features of the21listed automobile corporations that have been concluded in previous chapters, the theoretical frame in Chapter4is employed to verify the index evaluation system. The indexes in the evaluation system have been sorted into three classes. The first-class and second-class indexes all strictly fit the evaluation system in Chapter4. The third-class indexes are affiliated to the second-class indexes, which explain second-class indexes from more detail perspectives. The results of this chapter indicated that most of the factors are consistent with the theoretical hypotheses. Finally, the core competitiveness of each enterprise are concluded according to the grades of each factors.Chapter6is the last part of this research. This chapter has summarized all the conclusions of the dissertation, meanwhile, offered some suggestions for the further development of Chinese automobile industry.
