With the development of social economic and improvement of people’s living standard, tourism has become important in the way of people’s life and consumption. Nowadays tourism is changing from traditional sightseeing tour to holiday leisure and interactive entertainment tourism. Water tourism is regarded as one of the first choices during holiday for its distinctive attractions. This paper investigated the quantity, quality and distribution of Nanjing water tourism resources based on some related data and filed research and analyzed its market demand. At last, the suggestion of Nanjing water tourism resources’ exploitation and protection was proposed.This article was divided into six parts. The first part was introduction, which states background and significance of the study. Research framework and methods were identified. The second part reviewed the domestic and overseas research progress from various aspects such as water tourism resources, water tourism development. The third chapter clarified the related concept and theoretical system including recreational belt around metropolis, systematic theory, leisure theory and sustainable development theory. The fourth chapter was about the characteristics of Nanjing water tourism resources. Firstly, the types and space distribution characteristic of67focal water tourism resources were analyzed according information got from field trip. And then we evaluated them on the basis of Classification, investigation and evaluation of tourism resources(GB/T19872-2003). Based on the above analysis, the general characteristics of Nanjing water tourism resources were concluded. The fifth part studied current situation of water tourism resources and discussed citizens’travel behavior. Combined data from questionnaire and others related data, this paper analyzed market demand of water tourism in Nanjing and gave some advice on its exploitation and protection planning. The last chapter was about conclusion and research prospect.Based on above research, this paper made some conclusion as follows:Firstly, from the perspective of quantity, Nanjing has abundant water resources, such as lakes, rivers. There are67focal water tourism resources which mainly involve two main classes, five classes, and nine basic types. There are43.3percent of natural water landscape and56.7percent of landscape of water conservancy projects among the67water resources. Reservoir recreational area has the largest number, accounting for48%and the percent of rivers for sightseeing and recreation is about24.37%, ranked secondly.Secondly, from a quality point of view, Nanjing’s water tourism resources are not only abundant but also of great quality. Nanjing has35tourism resource monomers which are in good level accounting for52.2percent in Jiangsu Province. And32tourism resources monomers are in common level accounting for47.8percent.Thirdly, from the point of view of space distribution, the water resources are distributed in all districts and counties. Compared to the main city zone, suburban has a larger number of water resources which is more scattered. Among all the districts and counties, the quantities of water resources in Jiangning accounts for28.7%, followed the main urban area and Gaochun district which both account for19.4%.Fourthly, there are some conclusions from the market research about recreation and tourism belt around Nanjing. Most of tourists are freelance, employees, and civil servant, so tourism products should be designed to meet different groups’ demand. A majority of tourists get information from travel agencies and second from internet. It is important that broaden the new scales channels and increasing propaganda through internet. The main purpose of tourism is for relaxing on holiday. Men prefer relaxing and business conference while women prefer health spa. Hence, the products should focused on relaxing and leisure and be designed according sex. Tourism marketing has an important role in affecting tourists’ decision making, therefore independent travel should be developed. Hot spring season is from October to next May and from May to October is the hot season of sightseeing and water recreation. So different festivals could be hold in different seasons and holidays. Tourists always stay in destination for one or two days. Developing special tourism projects, promoting tourism resources’ attraction can extend the time of visiting and improve the economic benefit. More than half of people want to be close to nature and appreciate rural scene, which implies that protecting nature and rural environment is important in tourism developing.Fifthly, we made some advisements about development and protection. Nanjing will add3new national water recreational areas and8provincial water recreational areas by2020, while add1national one and3provincial ones by2015and reserve15water resources which have the potential to be national or provincial water recreational area in the future. In the development of water tourism, protection should pay attention to the condition of water resources, water projects, water ecological environment and water culture heritage, making Nanjing’s water tourism resources get sustainable development.
