The rapid development of Chinese cities were obvious since the reform and opening up.The development of the city’s extensive growth from the initial unplanned, concentric circle"pie" type, and “urban land plan malfunction ", encourages urban sprawl process.There is a great impact on the urban sustainable development. The compact city as a new way to solve the urban sustainable development in view of scholars.It has a significance guiding for the future urban planning. City infrastructure as a part of the city structure, its level was inextricably linked with the compact degree. In this paper, the 280 prefectural leve cities as the research object, in 2000- 2012 as the study period, studied on relationship between urban compactness and urban infrastructure efficiency, and established urban compactness comprehensive evaluation model,and according urban compactness of the space divided into different characteristics and urban scale classification features were analyzed, as the same time used data envelopment analysis(DEA) to calculateurban infrastructure efficiency, and analysis the characteristics of the changes.City compactness was overall upward trend, the geographical distribution was "East High and west low", the eastern city compactness was generally higher than the western city,the same as the level of economic development of our country and presented obviously along the wire distribution trend of compact city. Higher degree of the city formed "two vertical and three horizontal" along the Beijing Harbin line basically, the Beijing Shanghai line, the Beijing Guangzhou line Longhai Lanxin line, and zhe Gan line of Guikun line.According to the city scale, the prefecture level city compactness presented "V" shape distribution,namely the hurge city, especially big city and small city compactness was high, but the big city and medium-sized city compact degree was relatively low, especially the big city was the lowest a city in various types of compact degree.Based on the data envelopment analysis to Calculate city infrastructure investment efficiency, the level has increased year by year, and the number of the city best efficiency was increasing, the difference between the city continued to narrow, city infrastructure efficiency rised, but the change of obvious, the higher urban hierarchy level the high city infrastructure efficiency value. From the regional perspective, the south coast, the eastern andthe northern coastal city infrastructure efficiency were rapid growth, and the most rapid was the east coast, southwest and northwest area development was relatively slow. To calculate the urban compact degree and urban infrastructure efficiency coupling coordination degree, it found that urban scale and geographical had large impact on coupled coordination degree, the larger scale of the urban, the more lean to the eastern coastal areas, the coupling coordination degree higher, and vice versa.The relationship between urban compactness and infrastructure efficiency were weak correlation. In the second half of the study period, the urban compactness and urban infrastructure efficiency appeared negatively, that is to say, the urban construction in blind has became the obstacle of urban infrastructure. On the whole, 2000-2006 high degree of compact city, its infrastructure efficiency was also high. But in 2012,the high city infrastructure efficiency was low than the moderate degree of compactness city, it was basically same conclusion that studyed relationship between city compactness and infrastructure efficiency. Calculation of city compactness and city infrastructure efficiency coordination degree of coordination found that it affected by city scale and the local influence, the higher the level of city scale, the region is more near to the eastern coastal areas, the coupling of the two coordination degree is higher, and vice versa.
