Berth No.62 in Qingdao port is built in 1990,it was designed to receive VLCC in ballast to export crude oil,but it was promoted as an import oil terminal to receive full-loaded VLCC in 21 century.After the construction of two new berths which lies north and south of berth No.62,the deep water area near the berth expands a lot.There is a turning area of 1.2 nautical miles diameter,and the depth is over 21.5 meters.There are thousands of VLCC which have been port side alongside this berth,but due to the new berth construction of berth No.90 and Yijia oil terminal,the current near this berth has been changed,and made a threat to get port side alongside this berth.The study bases on the procedure of port alongside the berth No.62,and uses ship handling simulator in DLMU to obtain the best way to get the VLCC starboard alongside this berth.The study finds out that it is safer if the VLCC arrives at the outside turning area of this berth at low water.The current is less than 1.0 knot,and it is safer to get alongside the VLCC against the current.As to the rules of UKC of this berth,it is safer to get VLCC starboard alongside the berth No.62 in Qingdao when the low water is more than 1.25 metres.
