With the developing of industrialization, large mechanical equipments are widely used in ships, nuclear areas, chemical areas, etc. Pipe-routings are playing major roles in material transportations and exchanges by building up connections between equipments and surrounding environments. So it is very significant to design pipe-routings during the design process of large mechanical equipments. The basic parts of traditional designing process can be described as primary design, evaluation and redesign. The process of evaluation and redesign must repeat as the differences on complexities between different pipe-routings,which make the process take most of the time on designing schedule. The main part of the evaluation on pipe-routings is the evaluation on maintainability,which require designers of highly realizations about the importance of human-beings as the main parts of the maintenance movements. It can make the process of maintenance successful and improve the efficiency of maintenance movements by providing reasonable maintenance spaces for workers. The evaluation of maintenance spaces in pipe-routings includes the evaluation of equipments operation spaces and the evaluation of spaces for human activities. The evaluation of equipments operation spaces is to make sure the equipment can finish certain maintenance movements and the evaluation of spaces for human activities aimed to make workers operating in comfortable postures. Evaluation of the maintenance spaces in the areas motioned above can improve the efficiency of maintenance as well as make workers operating safely and healthily. The main researches of the article are mentioned as follows:(1) Summed up indicators in evaluating maintenance spaces and putting forward comprehensive evaluation methods considering the working spaces of maintenance tool,accessibility of equipments and comfortable working postures. Mathematic evaluation models about operation spaces of open-end wrenches in maintaining single and complex pipe-routings are established. Then the minimum distance between pipe-routings is calculated.(2) Analyzed the structures about upper limb and main trunk of human and used D-H method to establish transformation matrixes, then made programs in MATLAB to create accessible areas.(3) Used VB to do secondary developments on DELMIA to develop parametric modeling platform for building virtual maintenance human body models.(4) Took pipe-routing equipment as example to analyze and optimize its spaces for maintenance tools and working activities.
