In the practice of interpretation, the author finds that when to begin to interpret has a great impact on the performance of interpreters as well as the quality of interpretation. The differences of literary style, intensity of information and capability of interpreters and other factors have impacts on when to begin to translate. If interpreters choose to begin early, there would be two different results. First, the interpreters can follow speakers closely and interpret the information affluently. Second, the interpreters hardly get the logic of speakers and cannot fully convey the information in an affluent manner. If the interpreters begin to interpret late, there would also be two similar results. Therefore, the thesis tests these hypotheses through empirical study. In the theory party, the author reviews the main theory, including the theory of short-term memory and the effort model. Meanwhile, the author also introduces the elements that have impact on when to begin to translate. The study takes Chinese-English simultaneously interpretation as example and conducts quantitive and qualitive analysis on them. The thesis analyses the impact of when to begin to translate on short-term memory and effort allocation as well as the quality of interpretation. The findings of the study basically agree with the hypotheses.Based on the empirical study, the thesis proposes some suggestions. The interpreters fall a little bit behind speakers and begin to interpret when they can capture the logic and information of speakers, in order to avoid unnecessary mistakes. In simultaneously interpretation, interpreters should choose a proper time to begin to interpret, ensuring the quality of interpretation.
