A Translation Project Report On "Introduction:The City As Translation Zone"

This is a translation project report on "Introduction: The city as translation zone" written by Michael Cronin and Sherry Simon. It is published by Translation Studies. Discussing the four elements(the sensory landscape, translation zones, cultural mediators and digital connectivity) through which translation can be considered a key to understand urban life, the source text discusses how languages and translation are influenced by the development of cities, and how these elements are maintaining the diversity of urban life as translation zones. To some degree, this project is of importance reference value for those who intend to have devoted themselves to the translation industry. The translator not only has a better understanding of translation theories and enriches translating experiences by translating this academic paper, but also gains close access to the guidance of theories and the significance of practices, which has laid a solid foundation for the future.The translator takes the Christiane Nord’s text analysis as the theoretical guidance in this translation project. Through analyzing the language feature, text type of the source text and the translated-oriented text, one can explore that such translation difficulties, as difficult long sentences and terminology, existing in the translation process can be solved by means of some translation techniques, including sequential translation, division, and inversion. Through the applying of translation techniques, the information and academic value of the source text can be clearly delivered to the target readers. Moreover, the terminology in the source text is still a problem to be settled.
