Where I'm coming from introduces some celebrities, the family stories and life events of some famous people around the world. The original material is a series of private letters in Where I'm coming from written by an American preacher who came to China in the 20 th century to do missionary work. These letters have a lot of historic information, such as historical figures, historic events and old place names.Although it is not difficult in understanding the main meaning of these letters, there are also some complicated sentences and ambiguous words because of the long history of the original material, hence making great trouble for translators. This report mainly discusses how to deal with the ambiguous words and complicated sentences led by Nida's function equivalence.Faced with ambiguous words, the author mainly adopt amplification and annotation, omission these two translation strategies to deal with it in the principle of loyalty and fluency. And for complicated sentences,in order to make the translation more linked with the habit of target language and the expressing style of target reader, the translator deals with it by using free translation, amplification and reinventing sentence structure. It is hoped that some suggestion are proposed via this report to other translators through the analysis of vague words and complicated sentences. The limitation of this report is that the author analyzes the vague words and complicated sentences only from Where I'm coming from and does not discuss it for a large-scale,such as other kinds of texts.
