The report is based on the translation of Mayo Clinic Guide to Your Baby's First Year published in May, 2012, approximately 140,000 words. The selection of this book on children heath care as a source text for translation is due to the following reasons: first and foremost, it is of great scientific value since it is written by Mayo Clinic — one of the most famous medical institutes; furthermore, it is full of useful information since it covers the health knowledge for the first year of baby life and thus provides guidance for new parents; last but not the least, it is worth translating since it contains technical terms, complex sentence structures and rich professional knowledge. It is challengeable and typical for a translation career.Since this book is distinctively scientific, informative in content and operational in action. The report author chooses three chapters from Mayo Clinic Guide to Your Baby's First Year to translate, and bases the report on the translation. The source text belongs to the type informative text. According to the theory of text typology, the translation of informative text emphasizes on representing objects and facts or information in logical expression. On the method of translation, the translator adopts “plain prose” to explicit the information as required, not only focusing on the representation of the expression forms of the source language.This four-part report is composed of the description of translation task, the review on translation process, the analysis on translation cases, and the summary on the translation practice. Part One is concerned with the source of original text, the brief introduction to the author and the analysis of the concise introduction to the report. Part Two is focused mainly on the preparations for the translation, the difficulties and the methods of resolving them, proofreading after translation and analysis on polishing. Part Three is the nucleus of the report in which the specific difficulties and typical cases are analyzed, the translation techniques are articulated, and the translation perspective is displayed. In the process of translation, specific strategies are adopted as follows, conversion of words, repetition, amplification, omission, division and combination, translation of passive voice, translation of long sentences, and analyzes the translation with reference to the original text. By analysis of the previously acquired theories and techniques on translation can be displayed in practice with the purpose to transmit the original text accurately.Through the translation practice, author has experienced a painstaking effort and realized that a qualified translator should have a variety of qualities such as mastery of rich knowledge, a serious attitude towards work and strong bilingual capabilities.
