Practice Report On Interpreting For EU-China Partenariat Round Table Conference

As a practice report on Interpreting for International Business Negotiation(IIBN), this paper describes the interpreting task of 2014 EU-China Partnariat conducted by the author. The interpreting task is classified as IIBN in terms of its content. In international business negotiation, interpreters are required not only to transform the information from source language to target language but to serve as mediators who help facilitate communication and move the negotiation forward. Thus, the selection and application of interpreting techniques is of vital importance.This report aims to illustrate how interpreting techniques such as amplification, omission and conversion are applied in IIBN through analysis of examples taken from EU-China Partenariat round table conference in order to make the negotiation move forward smoothly. In the meantime, it is hoped that a report on such interpreting practice might be of great help to those who happen to have no experience addressing this kind of interpreting task.The report is composed of four chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the interpreting task, including the background, features, content and schedule of the conference as well as requirements for interpreters. The preinterpreting work is written in chapter two, which is composed of the analysis of participants, preparation of terminology and glossary. Chapter three is the key part that analyzes the application of interpreting techniques such as amplification, omission and conversion at the conference. The fourth chapter deals with the author's reflections on this interpreting task and suggestions for similar interpreting tasks in the future.Finally, some conclusions have been reached. First of all, proper selection and application of interpreting techniques according to the features of the conference is indispensable for fulfilling the interpreting task. Considering different factors, the author applies interpreting techniques, amplification, omission and conversion to EU-China Partnariat round table conference. In addition, good preparation is the key for high-quality interpreting, apart from having a deep understanding of the conference, interpreters need to analyze the participants and be familiar with the material related to the conference, such as terminology and glossary.
