Neutral-tone Word is a blind spot in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language as well as a difficulty in Chinese phonetic learning. The paper mainly investigates and studies on problems encountered by HSK elementary-level foreign students during the process of learning Neutral-tone Words. First of all, the paper sorts out the developing venation of researches and instruction about Neutral-tone Words, systematically summarizes the definition, characteristics and functions of Neutral-tone Words, and finds out difficulties in Neutral-tone Word learning. Secondly, the paper analyzes Neutral-tone Words collected in Boya Chinese Elementary ??(Second Edition), compares them with Neutral-tone Words recorded in the New HSK Outline and the Implementation Outline for Putonghua Proficiency Test, formulates a list of must-read Neutral-tone Words for Chinese learners starting from zero. In conclusion, by investigating into foreign students' learning of Neutral-tone Words and TCSL teachers' teaching situation, the paper tries to put forward basic suggestions about how to conduct Neutral-tone Word teaching, in the hope of helping and promoting the teaching of Neutral-tone Words in Chinese as a foreign language.
