International cooperation has been rising into a new level with the deeper reform and opening up prevailing in China. Overseas engineering and construction, as a crucial part involved in international cooperation, will be undoubtedly engaged in the increasingly-fierce international combat and cooperation due to the maturity of the "One Belt, One Road" Initiative which highlights the importance of the bidding activities. This report takes an example of the bidding documents of the Engineering Construction Tender of Comprehensive Electrical Installment of the International Culture and Art Center Project of Meixi Lake in Changsha provided by CHANGSHA BUILDINGS CO., LTD OF CHINA CONSTRUCTION FIFTH ENGINEERING BUREAU. The documents consists of 8 chapters, including Invitation for Bids, Tenderer Instructions, General Principles etc. and I was engaged in the translation of the following contents:the Tender Invitation in the first chapter, the Tenderer Instructions as well as the General Principles in the second chapter. It is widely known that plenty of differences exist between Chinese and English languages. How to combine the features of the English language with the reading habits of the target readers to deal with the translation work of Chinese bidding documents tends to be the most tough problem for me.The problem is mainly embodied in three aspects:the vocabulary, the sentence voice and the sentence structure. There are numerous technical terms in the Chinese bidding documents, and the active voice is widely used in sentences. Besides, the sentence structure turns to be loose with a plenty of attributive and adverbial clauses, which together leads a tough task for the translation work. As a result, full preparations were made before translation, such as the collection and accumulation of terms, the study of relevant translation theories and strategies. The problems were finally solved by using different translation strategies such as word-formation for technical terms translation, changing active voice into passive voice and changing the loose Chinese sentence structure into tight structure by using attributive or adverbial clauses. This report, based on the practical translation work including translation background, the preparation work, the problems and solving methods as well as after-translation enlightenment, was finally finished with about 13,000 words and turned out to be a helpful trial for bidding documents translation study.
