A Report On Translating Technical Regulations For Production Of Nonferrous Metal Mines Into English

In July 2015, the author translated texts on nonferrous metal mines in a total of about 50,000 characters for Department of Commerce of Hunan province.10,000 words in this report are selected from PPT course ware of "Technical Regulations for Production of Nonferrous Metal Mines" in "Training Course on Nonferrous Metal Development and Utilization Techniques for Developing Countries,2015" which was organized by Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and undertaken by Department of Commerce of Hunan province. It is this translation practice that stirs the author's interests of translation on nonferrous metal mines, and prompts some thoughts on translation, especially the translation of terms on non-ferrous metal mines.The biggest problem the author faced is the translation of terms in the source text on the production of non-ferrous metal mines. Problem in the translation of terms boils down to the author's lack of relevant professional knowledge and the difficulty in standardization and unification in the translation of terms. In order to solve these two difficulties, the author needs to fully understand the exact meaning and connotation of terms in the source text, and then considers their standardization and unification. In the translation practice, many corresponding translations for one term can be found by different channels. Which one should be selected and why it is the translation are essentially the problem of standardization and unification in the translation of terms. The target readers of the course ware are foreigners from developing countries, so standardization and unification of the translation of terms is particularly important. If standardization and unification in the translation of terms can be achieved, foreigners'comprehension can be the same as what Chinese expresses, so it can promote friendly exchanges and cooperation. In order to solve these two difficulties, the author takes advantage of paper bilingual dictionaries. When problems cannot be solved by paper bilingual dictionaries, the author asks the Internet for help, namely, the Internet Aided Translation (IAT). The final translations of some terms are determined by relevant authoritative websites. The author also checks them in some foreign professional books to identify whether they are accurate and authoritative. This can be called a kind of parallel text which is any material that is close to the content in the source text for reference. Whatever the method is. the author makes every effort to achieve the accuracy and authority of the translation of terms.
