| Chinese: A Guide to the Spoken Language and Chinese Phrase Book, written by the famous American linguistics scholar Charles F. Hockett and famous historian Chaoying Fang together, were published in 1943 by the United States Department of War during WWII.As issued right after the Pacific War, these two books were published for military personnel only. No matter in the field of research on Chinese for Specific Purposes or on Intensive Language Teaching, they are both of great value in terms of contents and arrangement. This thesis focuses on four aspects' analysis of the contents: pronunciation, vocabulary, culture and functional items. In addition, after description of the compiling features, it points out the uniqueness of the teaching concept, and then give an overall evaluation of the books. |
