Since 2020,Covid-19 has swept the world, having a profound impact on the economy, politics, culture, and other fields throughout all countries. In the face of the threat of this pandemic,it has been a hotly debated issue how to take effective measures to contain the spread of the virus. In that context, the first IAS Covid-19 Conference took place.Due to the impact of the epidemic, the conference was held online.Officials, epidemiologists, and immunologists from several countries were invited to share their insight into Covid-19,including the latest scientific findings, policies, and practices in response to the pandemic and the measures that should be implemented in the future.Aiming to discuss how to interpret speech with a high level of professionalism through the online platform, the author selected this conference as the material for the E-C simulated interpretation.Based on this interpreting practice, the thesis is divided into four sections: introduction,pre-interpretation preparation, case analysis, and conclusion.Under the theoretical guidance of Gile’s Effort Model, case analysis is conducted to analyze and reflect on the task.Factors that contribute to cognitive load include long and complex sentences, high information density, and long working times, for example, declining quality of output. After the introduction of the difficulties, solutions are proposed accordingly.Firstly,It is found that qualified pre-interpretation preparation should closely combine terminology memorization with background knowledge for a specialized area such as medical care.Secondly, efforts should be reasonably distributed to avoid cognitive saturation by adopting certain interpreting strategies, such as omitting less-important information and reducing the quantity of taking notes.Thirdly, the interpreter should adjust the interpreting strategy according to the feature of online interpreting. For example, the interpreter can do the sight translation if the speakers’ speech has high similarity with the Powerpoint slides.Last but not least,long-term preparation to enhance interpretation skills will also be necessary. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and summarize this interpreting practice, and to provide new perspectives for medical interpreting research.
