With the acceleration of globalization, there are more and more exchanges and communications between China and other countries in trade, culture, technology, and other fields. Interpreters are in great demand both in various international events and daily communications. Interpreting aims to enable people with different language backgrounds to communicate freely and tries to build a cultural bridge for them as well. Therefore, English-Chinese bilingual interpreting becomes more important in the context of globalization. This simulated consecutive interpreting practice report is based on Arthur Brooks' speech entitled "A Conservative's Plea:Let's Work Together" delivered at a TED conference. This report takes the interpreting text of Arthur Brooks' speech as the subject to analyze. The author tries to summarize the skills and strategies used in the translation practice, point out the problems occurring in the process and try to come up with suggestions to better cope with these problems when encountering source language at high speed in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. This thesis is divided into four parts:Part one is an introduction which briefly introduces the background and feature of this task, subject for analyzing and the problems in the interpreting text the author wants to analyze and discuss. Part two introduces pre-interpreting preparation and emphasizes its importance as to the production of smooth conduct and good performance of the very interpreting activity. The transcript of the speech and the text of author's interpreting are added in the appendix. Part three is case analysis. In this chapter, the author chooses some examples to analyze them from three perspectives:"the application of the principle of syntactic linearity and the conversion of sentence components", "the application of brevity strategy" and "the analysis of such problems of hesitation, correction, misinterpretation and pretermission." Part four comes to some conclusions as follows:1. the importance of pre-interpreting preparation:the pre-interpreting preparation plays a very important role in simulated consecutive interpreting. Under the situation of source language at high speed, it's important to collect background information as much as possible to make an adequate preparation for interpreting.2. brevity strategy, the conversion of sentence components and the principle of syntactic linearity are effective coping strategies which can offset some effect of high speed on consecutive interpreting.3. the author analyzes the reasons leading to hesitation, correction, misinterpretation and pretermission in interpreting under the situation of source language at high speed. This report studies the coping strategies for English-Chinese consecutive interpreting with source language at high speed through this simulated practice. Through this report, the author hopes to offer some suggestions about some feasible coping methods for the learners of interpreting to produce a better performance in the future interpreting practice.
