In consecutive interpreting,it occurs that an interpreter is constantly confronted with such challenges as colloquial, professional,or even illogical source messages when in an attempt to deliver his/her rendition smoothly. On the other hand, although an interpreter may have made adequate pre-task preparations,he/she may still encounter some unexpected words, terminologies,or accents during interpreting. To make sure that he/she is able to render relatively accurate and quality communicative interactions, the interpreter should adopt appropriate strategies to handle challenging situations. This practice report is a review on the simulated English-to-Chinese consecutive interpreting of the interview with British linguist David Crystal on the development of English. The interview to Crystal, organized by the British Council, has the characteristics of fast speech speed, frequent use of colloquialism and professional terms, thus causing a challenging situation to the interpreter. After describing the whole simulated consecutive interpreting task, the interpreter and author gives an account of the difficulties arising in the simulated consecutive interpreting task, and then she analyzes the information processing strategies she adopted in the interpreting process under the guidance of the interpretive theory. Finally, the report summaries the gains and the limitations of the interpreter in the interpreting task.It is hoped that the report can shed light on feasible strategies for other interpreters on similar interpreting occasions.
