The employment issue of graduates has long been the focus of all sections of society.With the expansion of higher education,the number of graduates is accordingly increasing,thus making the graduates employment a tough issue.Although some government agencies have introduced various policies to alleviate the employment problem of graduates,it is more significant if graduates have their own career planning,job motivation and plans for future career development.Besides,it is noted that translation practice and research on career guide are limited in both their quality and quantity.In view of the above situation,based on a translation project of a career guide book entitled 80,000 Hours: Find a Fulfilling Career That Does Good,this report analyzes the source text,describes the translation process and explores certain translation methods in dealing with some typical translation problems at lexical level syntactic level and cultural level.In terms of source text analysis,the features of the source text are displayed as plenty of compound and complex sentences and objective,accurate and logical language style.In terms of the translation process,pre-translation work and schedule helps to ensure the smoothness of the task,and adequate proofreading is useful to guarantee a satisfied target version.In terms of translation methods,it is highly advisable that translation methods such as literal and free translation should be employed at lexical level,translation methods such as addition and omission,conversion and inversion,division and combination should be adopted at syntactic level and translation method such as using equivalents to translate should be used in idiom translation at cultural level.It is also suggested that a translator should balance the relationship among translation method,reproduction of source text meanings and target readers.It is hoped that this report will provide career guide and help graduates with their career development and shed some lights on how to translate career guide texts both practically and theoretically.
