Economic globalization has become the theme of the present era.As the world's second largest economy,China is on the fast track of economic development and plays an increasingly important role on the world economic stage.As the capital city of Jiangxi Province,Nanchang is devoted to attracting investment,especially from foreign countries in hopes of creating more business opportunities.The English version of the investment guide is the first-hand information for foreign investors to understand Nanchang.Therefore,it is undoubtedly important to translate Nanchang Investment Guide(hereinafter referred to as The Guide)into a highly-qualified English version.This thesis is a report of C-E translation of The Guide.The author firstly does an analysis of the project background,source text types and its characteristics.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,the author explores difficulties encountered in the translation process and puts forward countermeasures accordingly,mainly including the following aspects:Firstly,the main difficulty at the lexical level is reflected in the translation of terminologies and words with Chinese characteristics.Translation of terminology must comply with the norms in its specialized fields.By referring to terminology dictionary and making full use of online searching engines,the corresponding terminology in the target text can be found according to the specific context.And literal translation is always adopted as the main translation strategy for terminology.When it comes to translating words with Chinese characteristics,it is suggested that amplification,replacement and annotation be employed to convey the hidden cultural connotations behind the words.Consideration should be given to acceptability of target readers as well as the function that translation had in transferring culture with Chinese characteristics.Secondly,adequate attention should be paid to the differences in the origin,structure and voice between Chinese and English at the syntactic level.The Chinese version of The Guide contains redundant information,which is insignificant in the eyes of the target readers.Therefore,omission is adopted to show the essence and cater for the target readers who can quickly acquire the very information that interests them.Syntactically,Chinese guide features ambiguous information and unclear logic,therefore,rearrangement of sentence structures is made and amplification is adopted accordingly to maintain the completeness and coherence of the train of thought.Thirdly,there are huge differences in linguistic expression and thinking patterns between English and Chinese at the textual level.In order to pursue the symmetrical and balanced beauty,various rhetorical devices are widely adopted in The Guide,for example,antithesis,parallelism and reduplication in idioms and even poems.Domestication will be adopted for this kind of expressive text.At the same time,since there are a large number of figures and objective facts in part of The Guide,which can be regarded as the informative text,foreignization is employed as the main strategy to maintain the conciseness and readability of the translation.In summary,the Skopos theory is applicable to the translation of The Guide.Enough consideration should be given to the acceptability and requirements of target readers to realize the same functions of the source text.Based on the elaborate analysis of the given texts at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,proper translation strategies and methods should be adopted accordingly in order to attract target readers? investment interest in Nanchang.
