This study analyses the processing of anomalous information in Chinese-English interpreting from the perspectives of Effort Model and Relevance Theory. This thesis mainly studies simultaneous interpreting of impromptu speech from Chinese to English.Starting from the influence that anomalous information in source language has caused on interpreter's cognitive burden, this study justifies the necessity of modifying the anomalous information from the viewpoints of both interpreters and audiences.Through case studies and interviews, the paper finds that anomalous information in the source speech will increase the cognitive burden of interpreters in general and consequently influence the quality of output. But in cases that interpreters are consciously prepared for the recurrence of anomalous information and take initiative to mediate, the negative impact can be mitigated and the output quality be improved. For audiences' part,if interpreters don't mediate the anomalous information,or just process them in the wrong way,it will result in non-sensical output and diminish audience's trust in interpreters.Other factors such as accents, grammar mistakes, and disfluencies, traditionally thought be more decisive in the quality of output, don't seem to breach the audience's trust. Therefore, either for the interpreters or for the audiences,it is of vital importance to mediate the anomalous information in the source speech. From the perspective of Relevance Theory, this paper gives some guidelines and canons that need to be followed when processing anomalous information, and also gives specific advice on how to deal with anomalous information.
