A Translation Project Report Of The Report Of The Iraq Inquiry (Excerpts)

The rapid development of globalization brings about the frequent exchanges between countries in economy,politics,education and law.Meanwhile,the demands on the translation of specialized texts are on the rise.The translation of specialized texts are different from the literature translation,and the translator should adopt flexible translation strategies according to the text.This translation report is based on translating the Key Findings and Lessons of The Report of the Iraq Inquiry published by the British government.The report is the research on the involvement of the UK in the US-led invasion into Iraq in 2003,and the conclusion is that the reasons of the UK for invasion are not legal.This is a specialized text and the purpose of its translation is to convey the information of the source text.It is important to convey the exact messages of the source text to the trget readers and make sure that the target text could follow the reading habits of target readers.Meanwhile,the translation was quite difficult for the translator for the lack of relevant background information and the difficulties in the linguistic expressions of target language.So the translator used the English-Chinese Dictionary of Lu Gusun,the Internet search engines of wikipedia and the e-dictionary of Youdao,and asked helps from the tutors and classmates who helped read the target text and give suggestions to improve the translation.According to the characters of the research report,the Skopos theory by Hans Vermeer of the German Function School has been used to guide the translation,particularly,his three rules of Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.The translation task enhanced the translator's translating ability and facilitated the readers' understandings on the role of the UK in the involvement of Iraq war throughout the conflict and its actions and policies.
