This is a translation practice report on The Rainbow Comes and Goes:A Mother and Son on Life,Love and Loss,which is made up of one-year of email exchanges between the American legendary socialite Gloria Vanderbilt and her son Anderson Cooper,the primary anchor of the CNN.The translator chose chapter 4 and chapter 5 as the source text.This part starts with Gloria Vanderbilt 's fourth marriage,mainly includes the death of the husband(Anderson's father),the suicide of the son(Anderson's brother)and the relocation their life after such miserable sufferings.Gloria shares her life story with Anderson:miserable childhood,rebellious youth,unhappy marriage,unsuccessful career.Anderson poses questions and Gloria answers.Through the collection of correspondence,the mother and son unveil the secrets of Vandervilt family.The translation report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of the translation project,including a brief introduction of the two authors and the content of the source text;the purpose and significance of the translation project;stylistic features of the source text and Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory.The second chapter is the description of the translation process.The translator divides this chapter into three parts:preparation for the translation,difficulties during the translation and proofreading after translation.The third chapter is the application of functional equivalence and case analysis.In this chapter,the translator mainly discusses the translation from lexical,syntactic and discourse level in the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.The last chapter is conclusion.The translator reflects on the whole translation project and summarizes the lessons she learned through this process.Through translation practice,the translator has a better understanding of Nida's functional equivalence theory and further advance translation skills.
