This is a translation report of Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies(excerpts),including Finnish tradition and French tradition, written by Mona Baker. The book includes two parts on the whole(except for references and data indexes): the first part discusses the basic conceptual framework of translation studies and the second part offers a very brief overview of national histories of translation in some thirty linguistic and cultural communities and a glimpse of what full-scale history of each tradition.Under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, this report probes into the translation of academic monograph and talks about the focal and difficult points. The author tries to sum up the experience and lessons, especially how to process long sentences and discourse in translating,so that it can offer some suggestions in this kind of translation subject. Moreover, the translation report aims at presenting the academic achievements to Chinese readers,in the hope that further discussion, communication and research can be promoted by more scholars. This translation report is divided into three parts: Part One introduces the background of this translation project, including origin, objectives, significance of the project and the structure of the report.Part Two describes the translation process, which covers the preparation before translating, difficulties and its solutions. Moreover, the preparation before translating concerns about the analysis and summary of the language features of the source text. The difficulties in the translation lies in long sentences and discourse processing. The translation strategies are adopted to settle those difficulties, such as following the original order, inverting the original order, inserting and adding and deleting, under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Part Three concludes the lessons during the translation and unsolved problems.
