The project excerpts from The End of Plenty: The Race to Feed a Crowded World,published in 2015.This book is written by Joel K.Bourne Jr.,which dwells on food problem all over the world in different times and the measures to deal with the food crisis.The writer analyzes the problem with specific examples.The translator chooses the first three chapters to translate.This excerpt focuses on the population,natural disasters and government policies which are considered as the main reasons of famine,as well as the efforts and attempts to deal with famine.Through this translation project,the translator aims to make people realize the seriousness of food problem by the real data and examples.This text has its own unique characteristics,which contains many personal names,place names and works.The translator looks up relevant professional dictionaries and searches on the internet to find out the corresponding conventional Chinese translation.Also,this text involves some professional fields.The translator reads some relevant Chinese text to ensure the accuracy.Complex sentences account for the majority,but it also mixes with some simple sentences and common words.The translator analyzes them in the chapter of case analysis,and adopts various translation skills to make the translation idiomatic.Based on the analysis of the translation project,the following findings are put forward:(1)when translating personal name,place name and professional terms,the translator should try to search as much relevant information as possible,and compare the parallel texts to find the most precise expression.Also it is vital to understand the relevant professional knowledge and background information,which can make the translation more accuracy;(2)the translator should not be limited to the literal meaning of the common words too much,but to deal with them flexibly by analyzing them in context to make them more idiomatic;(3)when translating simple sentences,the translator should figure out the logic before and after them.While translating the complex sentences,the translator should analyze the sentence structures and adopt various translation skills,such as amplification,omission,conversion and reconstruction.
