Based on the English to Chinese translation practice of Kiwi Tracks and intercultural translation theories, this thesis aims to analyze the application of foreignization and domestication strategies on translating travel writing text.Dealing with a source text with cross-cultural nature, the translator,in fact,is supposed to translate dual intercultural text.Translation practice on Kiwi Tracks,a travel writing by a foreign author, fully indicates such feature. The translator has to deal with the large gap between source language and target language,i.e.English and Chinese, while enabling the readers to realize the differences of English between English-speaking countries. The focus of this thesis is to discuss how translator balances heterogeneity and readability,in order to ensure that the readers understand the text as well as realize those differences in source text. This thesis makes an analysis on examples from phonetics,words/phrases and sentences aspects of the translation, and comes to the conclusion that when translating travel writing text, foreignization should be taken as the principal strategy, while applying appropriate domestication to elements that are not translatable or hard to translate.Such strategy could no doubt satisfy the main purpose of intercultural translation, which is sending information of foreign cultures to the readers. With such strategy, the translation is able to ensure readers' understanding of the text,at the same time, maintain heterogeneous elements, help readers to know foreign cultures and finally achieve the goal of intercultural communication.
