A Translation Project Report Of The Report Of The Iraq Inquiry (Chapter ? Of The Executive Summary)

In the 21 st century,the age of information where cross-cultural communication has been undertaken actively,Chinese people boast a growing desire to familiarize themselves with important international events.Thus,a variety of translated works from different fields come to stage,not only to meet the information needs of people,but also to promote cultural exchange between different countries.This is a project report on the translation of the Report of the Iraq Inquiry,which was released by UK on July 6th,2016.The Report of the Iraq Inquiry,which involved a full-scale investigation on the Iraq Conflict in 2003,mainly focused on the background,process,influence and lessons of the war.The four sections that the author has translated are:The UK's Relationship with the US;Decision-making;Advice on the Legal Basis of Military Action;Weapons of Mass Destruction.The source text is characterized by abundant background information,proper nouns,long and complex sentences,passive structures as well as polysemy and nominalization,all of which become obstacles in translation.The project report adopts Katharina Reiss' theory on text types as guidance,in which texts are divided into three types with specific characteristics and translation strategies.Under the framework of theory on text types and on the basis of the translation practice,the report analyzes the application of informative text in information background,lexical and syntactic aspects.Thus,extension,conversion,amplification and other translation techniques are employed to convey the source text faithfully and reproduce the original style.Through the translation practice,the author concluded the enlightenment and lessons from the project and benefited from it greatly.It is hoped that this translation report can satisfy people's information requirements,deepen the sense of world peace and also offer some referential value for the translation of the report of similar type.
