This is a translation project report on The Iraq Effect:the Middle East after the Iraq War published by the RAND Corporation in 2010.With extensive field-based researches and primary sources,it offers an assessment of trends,threats,and opportunities in the Middle East after the Iraq War in order to analyze the regional impact of the war.The author is responsible for Chapter Four,Domestic Reverberations of the War:Internal Challenges to Regime Stability,which explores various pressures and assesses the threat from sectarian tensions,tribal mobilization,ethnic agitation,and Iraqi refugees.The difficulties in the translation can be listed as follows.First,the source text covers a great number of terms,such as names and organisation titles.Second,there are numerous long sentences,compound sentences and passive voices.Third,the author lacks the relevant background knowledge of the Middle East states in politics,military,religion,etc..Taking U,S.security policymakers and Middle East analysts as the target audience,the source text being the typical informative text aims at showing the research results and conveying the information.In light of the characteristic of the source text,when translating,the author places particular emphasis on delivering the information accurately to the target language readers under the guidance of the Text Typology by Katharina Reiss.For the sake of achieving the translation effect,literal translation is mainly adopted integrating various skills,such as addiction,conversion,invertion,extension and so on.The translation project helps readers gain more information about the complicated situation of the Middle East states after the Iraq war and be aware of the significance of the peace.Meanwhile,the author realizes that a qualified translator should not only master profound linguistic knowledge,but also constantly be concerned about current affairs.
