With the rapid development of modern society, people pay more attention to their cultural and ethical progress than ever,in which literature plays a positive and important role.By reading foreign literary works, readers can understand the custom, culture and ideology of different nations. Therefore,it is the responsibility of translators to translate the excellent foreign novels into Chinese. This report is based on the English-Chinese simulated translation project of the short story named “The Valley of Lagoons” written by David Malouf,a contemporary Australian writer. The Chinese version of this short story can not be found up to now. Thus, the author tries to translate it into Chinese to present it to the readers.Through the analysis of the project process and the cases, the report mainly discusses how the author, according to Eugene A.Nida's dynamic equivalence theory, applies different translation techniques on lexical level and syntactic level to make the translation more accurate and acceptable. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction about the background and purpose of the project,as well as the structure of the report. The second chapter is the project description which briefly introduces the project, the pre-translation preparation and the translation theory adopted in the project. The third chapter is the text analysis which analyzes the style and language features of the original text. The fourth chapter is the case study, analyzing specific cases with different translation techniques on lexical level and syntactic level. The last chapter is a conclusion to summarize the experience and problems of the translation practice. The author concludes that the translator should have a strong basis of the knowledge of translation techniques and can flexibly apply these techniques to make the translation convey the content and thought of the original text properly.
