Translation,as a bridge between different languages,is a cross-cultural communication tool.Translation plays a key role in understanding the differences between cultures.Local customs,traditional cultures in different places associate with the development of history.Knowing the development of history has a fundamental help to understand the current situation of a country.What's more,people draw lessons from history,ensure that the development of the history is in the right direction,and avoid the retreating of history.This thesis is a translation report based on Chapter 11,12 of American Version: Modern Times,the main content is about the reality during the Great Depression and the measures took by Roosevelt after he took the office to help the economy.The material is over ten thousand words,talking about events in the history.The lexical and syntactic structure of the source material are neither difficult nor complex.Due to the differences between English and Chinese,however,there are many difficult parts to tackle with.This textbook is published by Mc Graw-Hill Education Company,used as tenth grade textbook in all around the United States of America.According to Peter Newmark's classification of language functional text types,textbooks belong to informative text.This translation report makes the analysis of words and sentences combined with Peter Newmark's translation theory.This thesis is divided into four parts.The writer first introduces the translating material,the description of the resource,and the starting point of selecting material.The second part is about the preparation before translation including translation tools,translation theory,and the editing and proofreading of the translation.The third part is examples analysis,mainly about the analysis of the difficult and important problems during the translation from sentence change and words conversion,elaborating how to translate under the guide of communicative translation theory.The final part is conclusion of translation practice,the thinking during the translation and the inspiration and prospect of the future career.
