This translation report is a review and summary of the translation of If You Can’t Manage Them,You Can’t Teach Them(Chapters One and Two). This book was published in the year of2012,by a famous American publishing company,Incentive Publications, which is experienced in publishing education assistant books.Kim Campbell and Dr.Kay Herting Wahl, writers of this book, emphasize that by taking the advices and methods provided by this book, the teachers with different characters are able to improve classroom order and increase their teaching efficiency. And a pattern of happy learning and happy teaching will be finally built.Chapter One introduces teacher’s attitude and behavior and Chapter Two is on relationships. This book has been on the top list as soon as it came to the public in only two weeks for its plain language, clear logic and flexible style. It has a high reference value in the education industry. As there is no Chinese version up to now,by translating the orginal, the translator and her group members hope that this translation task could provide a reference to Chinese teachers.During the translating, the translator uses Katharina Reiss’ s Text Typology as guiding theory.Reiss emphasizes that the text should be divided into different types according to the different linguitic functions. The purpose, function and corresponding method of the translation are determined by different types.Based on her classification of texts, the translator identifies this source text as an informative text.According to the Text Typology, the language function of informative text is informative(representing objects and facts);its language dimension is logical;its text focus is content-focused;the target text should transmit referential content, and its translation should be explicitation as required, using plain prose. Moreover, the original also possesses the feature of operative text which is appellative-focused.Consequently,the translator uses specific strategies such as amplification, omission, notes and so on,to make the facts and viewpoints concise and understandable and reflects the appeal of the original text.Through this translation practice, the translator has a deeper understanding on the Text Typology and Functional Theory.Meanwhile, the translator realizes the importance of mastering the theory of translation and learns to put theory into practice.Last but not least, professional standard and high sense of responsibility are necessary qualities to a translator.
