Practice Study Report On E-C Translation Of The Rough Guide To Boston(Excerpts)

This report is based on the translation of The Rough Guide to Boston written by the American writer Sarah Hull.The book covers seven chapters,mainly introducing the history,transportation,scenic spots,diet culture and travel around Boston.The first segment of the third chapter is chosen as translation practice,which is more than twelve thousand words.The Rough Guide to Boston is a guidance book mainly used in the second phrase of travel,which is written for providing travel related information to tourists and also plays the role of attraction to those potential tourists.So the translation of travel guide should obey the goal-oriented rule.The author maintains that the Skopostheorie can well guide the translation of The Rough Guide to Boston(excerpts)practice and achieve the information function and vocative function since the core of the Skopostherie is that the translation aim decides the strategies and methods of translation.The translation report consists of six parts:The introduction describes the research background and research purposes and significance;the first part introduces the writer,the content of the text,and language features of the text;the second part introduces the translation process,including the preparatory work before translation,translation duration and revision;the third part analyzes the translation of travel guide under the guidance of the Skopostheorie;the fourth part aims to analyze the difficulties of translation in words,sentences and discourse and the methods to solve these difficulties;in the end,the author will make a conclusion on the experience and enlightenment of this translation practice.The main findings received from translation practice and analysis of difficulties in translation:the translation of travel guide should realize information function first,and vocative function should also be valued;proper noun,descriptive words,culture related words,long sentences should be translated properly according to the translation aim.Strategies like literal translation and free translation and methods like linear translation,reversing translation,division translation and comprehensive translation can be adopted.
