A Report On Escort Interpretation At Baoding Jinrun Machinery Equipment Co.Ltd. From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

As globalization has found its way to the companies in inland cities of China,more and more small and medium-sized companies are now heading for overseas market.Baoding Jinrun Machinery Equipment Co.Ltd is just one of them,the number of its foreign customers is on the rise annually.The author was invited to serve as the escort interpreter in the business communication between the manager and his foreign customer.Drawing on this interpretation practice,the author has drafted this report by adopting a reflective and analytic approach to the whole process.This practice has provoked the author's thinking on interpretation,particularly on how to fulfil an interpreting task and how to improve the quality of interpretation.It has also made the author aware of the significant role an interpreter plays in the integration of globalization and localization.Accordingly,the preparation for the task and the process of interpretation have been detailed.An analytical study is conducted afterwards on the basis of Nida's functional equivalence theory first from the part of the speaker and second from that of the interpreter.The former explains in detail the whole process of applying theory to practice and the latter highlights the significance of the interpreter.Comparative studies are carried out between source text and target text,so the merits and demerits of examples begin to surface.Revised versions are presented accordingly.Field interpretation and analysis have contributed to the author's in-depth thoughts on how to fufil an interpreting task related to English for Science and Technology and how to be an excellent interpreter.Hopefully,the report will be of value to interpreters who may take the kindred task and researchers who may carry out study about this field.
