| As China is taking an increasingly active part in worldwide political and economic activities,the strategy of Chinese culture’s "going global" is being stepped up.Chinese cultural documentaries,a vehicle of Chinese traditional culture,play a crucial role in cultural communication and national image building,The Archive of the Kong Fmily,a televised cultural documentary specially produced by CCTV,presents the eventful history of the longest lasting Chinese feudal noble family,the Kong Family,and reveals the respect for Confucius and his descendants in Chinese history.As a vivid symbol of Chinese excellent traditional culture,this documentary is also in keeping with China’s ’Going-out’ Cultural Strategy.Interpreting serves as a cross-cultural channel for cultural communication among nations.Documentary interpreting allows the target audience to learn better about rich contents of documentaries,in the hope of facilitating mutual understanding among nations and maximizing the overseas communication of Chinese culture.Based on the consecutive interpreting of the first episode of the Archive of the Kong Family,this thesis attempts to analyze interpreting difficulties and problems at the lexical and syntactic levels and propose corresponding interpreting strategies accordingly to achieve the desired results from the cross-cultural perspective.At the lexical level,culture-loaded terms including proper nouns used in ancient China,Chinese four-character idioms and classical Chinese words as well as near-synonyms occur frequently in this documentary.At the syntactic level,the difficulty mainly lies in the interpreting of classical Chinese sentences,long and difficult sentences and colloquial sentences.In doing so,the thesis is intended to focus on the interpreting and overseas communication of documentaries,especially Chinese cultural documentaries,with a view to enlightening further interpreting practices and better promoting Chinese culture to go global. |
