This translation report is based on the American writer's(i.e.,Alexandra Fuller)biography Leaving Before the Rains Come,2015.It narrates that Fuller grew up in a family with complex relationship between her parents and they experienced painful Rhodesia War.Therefore, she was no stranger to pain. But the disintegration of her own marriage leaved her shattered.Looking to pick up pieces of her life, she finally confronted the tough questions about her past, about the American man she married, and the family she left behind in Africa. She wanted to find a cure for the pain from all these miserable experiences. However, she finally realized that instead of spending a lifetime fearfully waiting for someone to show up and save her,we all have to save ourselves. The report analyzes the translation difficulties at lexical and syntactic levels. It puts forward some translation strategies under the theoretical framework of functional equivalence. To be specific, translation strategies such as conversion and explanation are used for word choosing and culture-loaded words at lexical levels;translation strategies like literal and liberal translation are employed at syntactic levels. Moreover, translation methods of cutting and linear translation are adopted to translate long sentences. The case analysis suggests that through choosing proper translation strategies when translating bestsellers, readers of the trget language could understand the text as readers of the original language do.The report encompasses four chapters. The first chapter introduces the writer, the selected book, and the significance of this translation practice. The second chapter elaborates on functional equivalence theory and its application to the current translation practice. The third chapter focuses on case analysis of difficulties in the text at lexical and syntactic levels, and it proposes different translation strategies under the theoretical basis of functional equivalence. The last chapter concludes the translation practice via presenting major findings and limitations.
