| In the recent years, the economic globalization has enjoyed an increasing development. Besides, the United States strategic focus has shifted to the Asian-Pacific region for the third time, both of which have brought about the fact that there have been long-standing international maritime disputes between different countries, such as the South China Sea issue, the East China Sea issue, the Korean Peninsula issue and so on.Dispute Settlement in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (DSUCLS) written by Natalie Klein explores whether the compulsory dispute settlement mechanism in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is necessary or not for the administration of maritime affairs, which is of great significance to international maritime dispute settlement. Therefore, the translation of this book and of texts with the similar subject can help people have a more profound understanding about international maritime disputes, thus exerting positive influence on dispute settlement.Having done much research on and reading of relevant literature, the author found that the research into the translation of DSUCLS or of texts with the similar subject is rare, therefore it is necessary to have a thorough exploration of its translation. In view of this, the author, taking her translation practice of DSCUCLS as a case study, attempts to conduct an in-depth research on the E-C translation of DSUCLS (excerpts) from the perspective of Skopostheorie in an effort to explore the translation strategies and methods of DSUCLS and texts with the similar subject. The findings of the research are as follows. At lexical level, words and phrases need to be translated according to their conventional expressions in the target language. At syntactic level, the original syntactic passive needs to be usually turned into active structure or notional passive, depending on the specific context; long sentences need to be handled through such techniques as division that they are in line with the syntactic convention and language habit of Chinese. At textual level, the translation of terminologies needs to be consistent in the whole target text, and appropriate cohesive devices should be used to make the translation cohesive. The present research can help us have a better understanding of the translation of DSUCLS and texts with the similar subject, which is of high practical value for the improvement of translation quality of such type of texts. |
