Guide Interpreting Under The Guidance Of Skopostheorie

With the ongoing wave of globalization,cross-cultural communication has become a frequent thing.Hence,the profession of guide interpreting comes into being and is here to stay.Guide interpreters’ proficiency in bilingual skills is by all means significant in providing qualified services and making a successful cross-cultural communication.However,owing to the inherent discrepancies in the cultural backgrounds of the parties involved,it’s inevitably for the interpreters to come across certain intercultural communication barriers,of which the language barrier is most obvious.Efforts to achieve effective guide interpreting would be put in jeopardy if these barriers can’t be coped with properly.Therefore,a sense of intercultural awareness,the determination of the purpose of the interpreting task and the appropriate employment of interpreting strategies and interpreting skills are of great importance for the guide interpreter to achieve a successful and satisfactory guide interpreting.This report of the guide interpreting practice in the archaeological site of the Nanyue Kingdom Palace represents a combination of Skopostheorie and author’s social practice.It can be divided into five sections.The opening section sheds some light on the nature of guide interpreting,requirements of guide interpreters as well as the academic value of the report.In second section,the pre-task preparatory work is mainly described,including glossary preparation,field research and simulation interpreting,etc.The third section provides the theoretical foundation for the report.The purpose of the interpreting task and the specifics of the target text are established in this part.Some efforts are also spent in deciding appropriate interpreting strategies and skills in accordance with the theory.The next section is the case analysis.The analysis will be conducted by walking through the cultural barriers encountered and the corresponding translating skills adopted to specific examples in the interpreting process.In the concluding section,some major findings in the practice and limitations of the report will be presented at length,wishing to serve fellow liaison interpreters.
