Based on the interpreting practice at the Second Silk Road International Arts Festival Performance Tour, the author conducts a study of the culture-loaded expressions she has encountered on the job.In this practice report, borrowing Eugene Nida's classification of culture into five categories based on the characteristics of culture, the author classifies culture-loaded expressions into five corresponding categories as ecological culture-loaded expressions, religious culture-loaded expressions, material culture-loaded expressions, social culture-loaded expressions and linguistic culture-loaded expressions. The author also probes into the challenges in C-E interpreting of culture-loaded expressions and the possible causes.Under the guidance of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory, the author uses culture as the basic translation unit and emphasizes the communicative nature of interpreting.Literal translation, free translation, functional substitution, transliteration with explanation and literal translation with explanation are adopted as approaches to C-E interpreting of culture-loaded expressions to achieve functional equivalence.Furthermore, evaluations are conducted to testify the validity of the approaches in hope to shed some light on related interpreting practices in the future.
