A Study On The Nature Of Transediting And The Transeditors’ Competencies In Language Service Industry

With the development of language service industry,the nature of transediting has totally changed.Once always regarded as a kind of translation ability,transediting has been endowed with new nature and significance.Instead of being a part of traditional translation ability,transediting itself is an underlying system of knowledge and skills needed to be a qualified transeditor.In this context,this study tries to explore the nature of transediting as a form of language services,the competencies that a professional transeditor is required to possess based on the Competency Model and then put forward a way of developing transediting competencies.The following three questions are explored: 1.What are the major features and nature of transediting as an important form of language services? 2 What are the key competencies that a professional transeditor is required to possess by the language service industry? 3 In line with the major features and nature of transediting,how should the key competencies be developed in profession-oriented translation education?In this study,to answer the first question,the author will first collect articles,dissertations,books and thesis about language service industry,transediting,post-editing and technical writing to explore the features and nature of transediting in aspects of definition,object,workflow,application area,competencies and etc.Then in order to answer the second question,the author will do a market research from the perspective of market requirements to conclude the basic competencies of transediting based on the Competency Model aiming to make the transediting competences systemized.This study will collect about 26 pieces of recruitment ads that fit the definition of transediting in this thesis and conclude with major elements by categorization,and finally make a conclusion about the major competencies required to be a qualified transeditor.Finally,the author will make a research about the current situation of the transediting and transediting-related courses offered in the higher education institutions from both at home and abroad,and learn from the cases of the curricula in Monterey Institute of International Studies,Chinese University of Hong Kong and Peking university through analysis and comparison and try to put forward a way of developing transediting competencies in profession-oriented translation education.Through the redefinition of transediting in the context of language service industry,it will be easier for the author to investigate the competencies needed to be a qualified transeditor.And the key competencies of transediting can be conducive to helping corporations in their selection of qualified transeditors and teachers to be more targeted in transeditors training.
