A Report On English Translation Of Chinese International Student Handbook Of Wuhan Institute Of Technology

International Student Handbook is designed for international students who pursue their study in institutions of higher learning in China,providing information and regulations of the university that every freshman should know in their future study.It is not only a tool to familiarize international students with the regulations and rules they are expected to follow but also to reflect its learning environment and standard of teaching and research.This thesis records translation of International Student Handbook of Wuhan Institute of Technology on the basis of skopos theory's three principles,namely skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.It shows how translator is directed by three feasible principles to apply suitable skills and tools in the practice of translating the handbook referred.The thesis is composed of four chapters: Chapter one describes the translation activity,including roles involved and contents of source texts.Chapter two presents pre-translation preparation,including analysis of source text,skopos of translation activity,parallel texts and so on.Through source-text analysis,translator divides the source-text content into two groups namely WIT instructions and WIT regulations and rules,according to which,translator selects appropriate strategies and techniques in translating different groups.Chapter three provides theories applied in the process of translating namely skopos theory and the last chapter gives the specific applied skills such as amplification,omission,combination and so on in translating International Student Handbook on the basis of skopos theory.skopos theory is outcome-oriented and purpose-driven,making translation more effective and efficient.It makes a breakthrough in translation theories,freeing translation research from linguistics limits and directing the perspective of translation research to social and cultural communication.This thesis presents translation activity fully on the basis of skopos theory,enriching the material base for its research field.
