The report relating to translation practice is completed based on finishing the C-E Translation of Student Handbook of Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages. It describes specific problems arising from the translating process and proposes some countermeasures. With regard to researches on translation of formal texts, Chinese scholars mostly focus on those political and legal texts. However, researches on problems with translating the texts about school’s regulations and rules have rarely been reported. Student handbook provides guidance for institutions of higher education to perform ideological education and behavior management for students. It falls into the category of regulation texts, presents the language feature of accuracy, but is not as mandatory or legitimately binding as the legal language. It is difficult to reach the equivalence in both meaning and style between the source and target languages. Moreover, for Huaqiao, which is a foreign language university recruiting worldwide students, providing an English version of student handbook will enable foreigners to have a good understanding of Huaqiao and the management mode of Chinese universities. The translation of the student handbook is guided by Nida’s dynamic and functional equivalence theory as well as different ways of thinking and language expression between Chinese and Westerners. Targeting translating problems, such as sentences indicating requirements, long sentences, and sentences with the term “者” which refers to students in Huaqiao and “凡” which means wherever the action is, some proper countermeasures are proposed. It is expected that this paper will enrich translation methods for regulative texts, perfect translation theoretical research on relevant text types, and offer some practical guidance for translators.
